This roundtable will bring together leadership from CALAPRS member retirement systems to discuss upcoming Social Security elections affecting county court employees. Decades after the courts separated from counties as independent public entities, it was recently discovered that required Social Security coverage elections were never completed. As a result, court employees must now vote on whether to participate in Social Security.
The session will provide an overview of the election process administered by the California State Social Security Administrator at CalPERS, clarify the role of retirement systems, and explore how employee elections may impact pension contributions and benefits. Participants will also share educational materials already in development and discuss operational considerations associated with different election outcomes.
